Engage or Evade Our Cultures

As the old saying goes, we are in the world, but not of it. We all know and, I am sure, quote that line repeatedly – it is an old one, but a good one!

But let’s stop for a moment and think about what it actually means to be in a world that we are not part of – how are we supposed to relate to such a world if we are foreigners – “strangers and pilgrims” as the Bible calls us (1 Peter 2: 11)?

God’s Way or The World’s Way

As Aurelius Augustinus (Saint Augustine) writes in his 5th Century book De Civitate Dei (City of God), there are two ways we can go about our business – God’s way and the world’s way. He calls this eternal dichotomy “the city of God” and the “city of man”.
