The Importance of Imagination for C.S. Lewis and Us
In 2000, Christianity Today polled its contributors on the top ten books of the twentieth century, and Mere Christianity came in first place by a significant margin. C.S. Lewis’s popularity has shown no sign of waning since then and, if anything, it is increasing.
What is the key to Lewis’s continuing impact? Lewis had a precision with words, the empathy to understand people’s deepest struggles, a rhetorical skill to order his ideas clearly and persuasively, a breadth of learning, an amazing memory, and an ability to tell stories. If I had to pick one ability to account for Lewis’s ongoing popularity, however, it would be his ability to combine reason and imagination.
God’s Word in Our Mouth is A Powerful Weapon
Long before it became a Google hot topic and the subject of several popular books, my wife and I heard German-born evangelist Reinhard Bonnke more than 20 years ago preach on “praying the Bible”. The way he put it, and he said God has spoken to him, was that “God’s Word in our mouth is just as powerful as God’s Word in His own mouth”.
Stand Firm Against “Stronghold”
The apostle Paul enlists the word “stronghold” to define the spiritual fortresses where Satan and his legions go for protection. These fortresses exist in the thought-patterns and ideas that govern individuals in their homes, workplaces and churches, as well as in communities and nations. Before victory can be claimed, these strongholds must be pulled down. Only then can the mighty weapons of the Word and the Spirit effectively plunder Satan’s house.
